About Our Cross Country Team
Due to the scarcity of resources and the inadequacy of educational institutions throughout the rural, isolated communities of the Tengger region of East Java, Indonesia, little to no basic health education is provided in most schools. Although one may find health education listed in the official curriculum of the institution, in practice the subject is often overlooked.
Serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in rural East Java, Indonesia, I’ve worked alongside Indonesian community members to establish the Tosari High School Cross Country Running Team in an effort not only to provide basic health & fitness education but to establish a positive youth development program for the underprivileged students living in these low-resource communities.
Our program provides a safe environment with consistent messages that support the development of self-motivation, self-confidence, leadership, care for others, and community involvement in our youth. Furthermore, in addition to our regular fitness training, students are educated in basic good health practices regarding nutrition, fitness, and hygiene; as well as our social responsibility to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
The Marathon Dream
Since its establishment in the Fall of 2012, the Tosari High School Cross Country team has gathered and developed an exceptional group of dedicated Indonesian youth. However, due to the isolated locale of the community, we lack the ability to provide these students with an opportunity to demonstrate and employ their running talents outside of practice – no competitions or other running teams are currently located throughout any of the nearby regions. With this in mind, we wish to travel to Bali this June with 10 of these extraordinary students in order to give them the chance to participate in the 2013 Bali Marathon & Half Marathon.
This is a once in a lifetime experience for many of these students who have never even left the village they were born in. They have worked so hard, and we wish to share with them the benefits that applying oneself can have on one’s future.
Why We Need You
In order to make this a reality, we need to raise a total of $2,200 in funds to cover the costs that this event entails. These include:
- Roundtrip bus & ferry transportation to and from Bali
- Accommodation for students and chaperones
- Meals for the weekend
- Race registration
